Alexandre de Betak

Alexandre de Betak is a visionary creative renowned for revolutionizing the fashion show format through his agency, Bureau Betak. Since founding the company in 1990, he has produced more than 1,500 runway shows, installations and large-scale events for leading maisons including Dior, Saint Laurent, Jacquemus, Viktor & Rolf, Hermès and Michael Kors. Often described as “the Fellini of fashion,” de Betak is known for immersive environments that blur the boundaries between scenography, architecture and art.

As a child, de Betak developed an interest in photography, telling BoF, “it all started for me when I was seven years old and my grandfather gave me an Instamatic camera, the little Kodak 127, and I started being very passionate about pictures.” The young de Betak knew he wanted to create precisely framed, memorable images, but he was too impatient to become a photographer.

De Betak produced his first fashion show at the age of 19, for the designer Sybilla Sorondo in Madrid. In 1990, de Betak opened his agency, Bureau Betak, in Paris. But his career really took off once he moved to New York in 1993.

“I proposed the antithesis of what people were used to seeing. I went in and tried to make [shows] very fast, very compact, very energetic and very minimal in the sense of how many messages you put into one.”

In 2021, Bureau Betak joined The Independents, where de Betak now serves as creative chairman, guiding innovation strategies and spearheading L’Incubateur, a mentorship and acceleration program for emerging creative talent. In 2023, he expanded his practice into art, interiors, architecture and design, extending his long-standing exploration of light, space and experience. Through these ventures, de Betak continues to shape the future of fashion and creative culture.
